(Check them for yourself.) Dr. Phil was not "disciplined" by the Texas Board in 1989. He was investigated, but the case was closed with no disciplinary action in 1990. He in fact DID retain licensure as a licensed clinical psychologist until 2002, when he chose to retire after 25 years. At that time, his television career was taking off and he no longer was practicing privately, where he would need a license. He has an earned PhD. He should be called "doctor." Also, after 25 years in the field, he certainly has a right to use the term (as does Matt Lauer when speaking of him) "psychologist." However, he can no longer say LICENSED psychologist. Perhaps it would behoove you (as I see you are also a psychologist) to write a retraction of this blog, correcting your false statements. Otherwise, it appears you are jealous of a successful man.

So beautifully interesting!!!

So beautifully interesting!!!

My mom sounds like The Paranoid, on the verge of i...

My mom sounds like The Paranoid, on the verge of insane... He is inappropriately confrontational, demeaning, arrogant, and heavy-handed. He lures people with serious problems into appearing on his show because "they get to be on television", an inexplicable draw for some. I have no idea if he harms anyone or not, but the aftermath(s) of his "interventions" worry me. I would imagine, given his history, that any lawsuits are settled quickly and with great confidentiality. His lack of a license and lack of any motivation to get one suggests that he knows full well that he could not possibly retain a license and continue to do what he does. Since most people seem to believe that he really IS a Psychologist, his antics are certainly not doing our profession any good. He is a disgrace to all of us, and even more disgracefully, the BOP refuses to do anything about him. It found that the sense of coherence is a relatively stable "world view," but that it can be altered in response to stress or traumatic events.

Antonovsky described it as something that develops and grows through experience, and in terms of general psychological theory about personality development, that makes perfect sense.

So the answers are: no, probably not given at birth; yes, basically enduring and stable in the manner of a trait; and yes, responsive to events in the manner of a "state" of being.

Send me an email about your interests. One thing that is confusing me from the literature is the question of trait v state. SOC is something that develops in life, rather than a born personality trait? Saw some research that found that SOc results were affected in short periods of time under state stress etc, rather than the stable core stress level? I am not from a psychology background so any help would be appreciated.
